SUV Roof Cargo Carriers: Box, Basket or Bag?

Roof basket with 15-cubic-foot bag — 51 × 36-inch listing
Requires crossbars and uses four U-bolt mounts. Compare the 51 × 36 × 5-inch basket dimensions, mounting clearance, crossbar spacing and hatch opening before ordering. Respect the lowest applicable roof, rack and carrier load limit, including the carrier weight.

Choose among them using the cargo you actually carry. Published capacity is less useful if a stroller will not fit through the opening or the carrier prevents the liftgate from reaching its normal position.
Begin with the roof system
Identify the bars and their usable spacing before buying a carrier. Check the carrier’s approved mounting arrangement, clamp clearance and position on the roof. Include the carrier’s own weight in the applicable roof-load calculation. A large empty box is already part of that load.
Weather protection and access
Compare the way a box opens, the position of its locks and how you will load it while parked. For a bag, read the stated mounting and water-resistance instructions rather than treating fabric construction as a guarantee. A basket needs a suitable restraint and weather plan for its contents.
Use a real packing test
Measure the longest items and the available opening, then check the parked height at home and your destination. Consider how much equipment you can lift comfortably to the roof. If the main problem is a small weekly grocery load, an interior organizer may solve it with less equipment to store and maintain.
